AFEEC Beginnings
The AFEEC used to be known as the Family Enterprise Excellence Conference (FEEC) held biennially in Cebu, Philippines bringing together top family firm advisors and families in business to share and engage as to how families can be better at handling family dynamics, ownership structures and business frameworks. Premier Family Business Consulting, Inc. a brainchild of Jonathan Ramos convened in 2011, the First Family Inheritance Conference, which ultimately evolved into a much larger and bigger conference that would be known as FEEC. Mr. Ramos’ vision was to be advocate for unity among members of families in business. The idea at the time was quite novel, but somehow, many believed that it was what was needed at that time, now several conferences later, the pandemic came.
Transforming for the New World
With the crisis came the difficulty of conducting face-to-face conferences. Consulting became difficult and challenging initially. But somehow the family business owners saw that face-to-face was not the way to go and did their best to transform to do digital. In a few months, Premier itself began its digital transformation learning and birthing new ways of doing things and embracing new paradigms. After a few short months and the need to have faster learning curves, Premier transformed to having digital consulting services. With the appropriate investments in equipment and training, the company emerged victorious over the challenges. The company realized that with the burgeoning of the new normal, boundaries were no longer there. Hence, more and more families in business came to embrace consulting via Zoom or other means.
Sustainability and Resilience
In 2020, the plans to have the AFEEC done came to fruition. With the difficulties of having a physical event, the Premier Team began exploring platforms to seamlessly deliver such a conference to a much larger audience. The search for technology providers was set into motion, reaching out to as far as North America to event management platforms. Finally, it was decided to acquire a US-based firm Cvent to deliver the conference attendee and speaker hub. The theme “Sustainability and Resilience in Braving the New World”, came naturally as the pandemic hit the entire world’s economy. Moving forward, the Premier Team assembled key experts, family business leaders and family firm advisors in its roster for the AFEEC. With the theme focused on sustainability and resilience, the AFEEC served as a venue to draw out plans for the new normal.
Large Asian and Global Footprint
True enough, the vision of AFEEC to extend to larger network of families became reality with the support of Family Business Network Asia (FBNA) and various country partners who mobilized participants for the advocacy of uniting families in coming up with their own strategies to manage family, ownership and business in the pandemic context. Among those who attended the are those coming from: the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, China, the US, Spain, Thailand, Yemen, Poland, Belgium, Slovakia, the UK, Algeria, Andorra, Argentina, Australia, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Nigeria, Panama and Peru. For the first time, the AFEEC was able to gather these broad audience of families in business, making the AFEEC truly a successful event.
